Anyone who has been to Asia will agree that it is a land full of adventure and sights to behold. Delhi is India’s metropolitan city at the same time its capital.  It is ranked as the second most populous city in the world with 22 million residents.  The city is also the largest city in India in terms of area. Included in the National Capital Region are the cities of Baghpat, Sonipat, Faridabad, Gurgaon, Noida, Greater Noida, Ghaziabad, and other neighbouring towns.

A City of Cities

Through most of its history, Delhi had been continuously inhabited since the 6th century BC.  Delhi has been a capital of different empires and kingdoms. After its capture, ransacking, and rebuilt during the medieval period, the modern Delhi is now a composition of cities across the metropolitan, hence; a city of cities.

Baghpat as a city of NCR in the state of Uttar Pradesh, India is the administrative headquarters of Baghpat District.  Sonipat on the other hand is a municipal town in the Sonipat district in the state of Haryana, India. It is part of the National Capital Region and is about 20 km from Delhi. Faridabad in Faridabad district is the largest city in Haryana. Gurgaon is the city with the third highest per capita income in India while Noida has the highest per capita income in the whole of the National Capital Region of India.

Sites for Sights

Delhi, India has many UNESCO Heritage sites it can really be proud of.  The Qutub Minar at 72.5 m is the world’s tallest brick minaret.  A UNESCO World Heritage Site that was built in 1560 is the Humayun’s Tomb which is the first model of the Mughal tomb complexes. Still another UNESCO World Heritage Site is Red fort, the location from which the Prime Minister of India speaks to the nation on Independence Day.

Other sights in India include the iron pillar of Delhi which is fashioned at the time of Chandragupta Vikramaditya of the Gupta Empire in 375–413.  Connaught Place in Delhi is another significant area being an economic hub of India’s National Capital Region.

Airport and Awards

Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) was awarded by the Airport Council International as the fourth best airport worldwide in the 15–25 million passengers category, and the Best Improved Airport in the Asia-Pacific Region.  In 2011, the IGIA was ranked the second-best airport in the world in the 25-40 million passengers category.   In 2012, the airport was recognized as the 27th busiest in the world with handled, for a 12.7% growth in traffic over the prior year and for handling 39,887,866 passengers.

From being a city of cities, one can only conclude that Delhi is not behind in development.  As a matter of fact, it is beautiful as it is modern especially when it comes to its infrastructures within the NCR.  There are many state of the art structures and roads and pavements of new concepts and designs. Yet with its growth and development, it has not forgotten its roots as seen in several UNESCO HERITAGE SITES.  And the airport with its numerous awards, tourists will surely feel very important with its remarkable amenities.

However, since the city is greatly populated, it is better to travel with a companion especially in the busy shopping districts to avoid some untoward incidents.  Other than this, enjoy traveling to Delhi.

Kunming is the capital and largest city of Yunnan province in Southwest China. It was famous as Yunnan-Fou until the 1920s. It is a cultural, economic, and political centre of Yunnan as well as a home to several universities, galleries and museums. There are many businesses in Kunming too. Kunming consists of an old walled city, a modern commercial district, as well as residential and observatory areas.  At the outskirts is a known bronze temple, dating from the Ming dynasty. Let us visit the busy streets and see what is in there that delights our eyes. And later enjoy the scenery of the parks to ease up the noise in the streets.

Kunming Streets

The city has grown rapidly under China’s modernization efforts. Kunming office buildings and housing projects developed at a fast pace while its streets have widened. Kunming is designated a special tourism center leading to a proliferation of luxury hotels and high rise buildings.

The city center has three major squares; Jinma Biji Square, Nanping Square and Dongfeng Square.  There are five main commercial areas in Kunming but the most popular pedestrian streets are Nanping Jie, Jingxing Birds-Flowers’ Market, and Jinma Biji Fang.

Kunming’s huge square outside the Workers’ Cultural Hall at the Beijing Lu-Dongfeng Lu intersection is a public focus with crowds doing taijiquan and playing badminton in the mornings.  Weekend amateur theatre acts are also performed in the square.  The city’s true center is west of the square across the adjacent old Panlong River  outside the Kunming Department Store at the Nanping Lu/Zhengyi Lu crossroads. This area is a densely crowded shopping district packed with electronics and clothing stores. The square is surrounded by many high rise structures.

The center is an area of importance to Kunming.  Under Kunming’s rapid modernization, the commercial street has been demolished to make way for apartments and shopping centers. Rising at the backdrop of a supermarket one block north of Zhengyi Lu, Nancheng Qingzhen Si is the city’s new mosque with its green dome and chevron-patterned minaret built on the site of an earlier Qing edifice.

Two large Chinese pagodas rise in the vicinity of Jinbi Lu parallel to Dongfeng Lu, each a solid thirteen storey of whitewashed brick crowned with four iron cockerels. The West Pagoda was constructed between 824 and 859, during the Tang Dynasty. The entrance to the West Pagoda is along a narrow lane on the right. In the surrounding courtyard, people allow their afternoons to while away playing cards and sipping tea. The East Pagoda which was built about the same time as the West Pagoda, is a more cosmetic duplicate standing in an ornamental garden.

Parks and Gardens

Cuihu Park is one of Kunming’s main parks and that is surrounded by a lake and greenery. It has a huge and elaborate network of winding paths and waterways, with lotus-covered pools and overhanging willows. It is a place where many people exercise, sing and feed the flocks of gulls. At the west side of the park is the statue of one of Yunnan’s popular patriots - Nie Er, the composer of China’s national anthem. Now it is open to public for free.

Daguan Park is on Dian Chi in Kunming’s southwestern limits. Originally developed by the energetic seventeenth-century Qing emperor Kangxi, it has been redesigned over the years to include a funfair, emporiums, and food stalls. ]Other parks in Kunming include Black Dragon Pool, and the Kunming Botanical Gardens in the north, and Wenmiao Tea Garden in Wuhua District.

Pattaya is a city in Thailand that is popular as a beach resort with tourists and expatriates. This city lies on the east coast of the Gulf of Thailand, approximately 130 km southeast of Bangkok.  Pattaya City is a self-governing unit which covers Tambon Nong Prue and Na Kluea and parts of Huai Yai and Nong Pla Lai.

The City can be found in the heavily industrial Eastern Seaboard zone together with Si Racha, Chonburi, and Laem Chabang. Once a fishing town, Pattaya first boomed during the Vietnam War and developed into a seaside destination for families. Since then foreign tourism to Thailand has been increasing with 14.5 million visitors in 2007.

Sights

Different theme parks and zoos can be found in Pattaya such as the Elephant Village, where training demonstrations and ancient re-enactments are presented daily. The Sri Racha Tiger Zoo shows alligators, tigers, and other animals daily. Other attractions include The Pattaya Crocodile Farm, Pattaya Park Beach, Resort Water Park, Funny Land Amusement Park, Million Years Stone Park, and the Siriporn Orchid Farm.

Between South Pattaya and Jomtien Beach is a small hill, Khao PhraTamnak that provides a panoramic view of Pattaya and its crescent bay. On top of this hill, the Wat Khao Phra Bat, a temple, and the monument of Kromluang Chomphonkhetudomsak, the “founding father” of the modern Thai navy.  Still another sight is the Underwater World, an aquarium with a collection of marine species in the Gulf of Thailand including sharks and stingrays.

Wat Yanasangwararam Woramahawihan is a temple built in 1976 for Somdet Phra Yanasangwon, the present Supreme Patriarch. Within the complex of the temple are a replica of the Buddha’s footprint and a huge Chedi which contains the relics of the Lord Buddha.

Thepprasit market is the busiest and biggest market in Pattaya. The market at Thepprasit Road attracts locals and tourists and is open at night every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. In the market are pets for sale, many Thai food stalls offering local specialities like fried scorpions and bugs, and branded clothes, shoes, and electronic goods.

Festivals and other Activities

Chinese New Year is normally observed within late January to early February. This is so because it is a lunar new year the people are celebrating with dragon parades, fireworks, and lion dances.

In music, the Pattaya International Music Festival is held annually in the month of March. It allures huge crowds to the different performance stages along Bali Hai Pier and Beach Road, where international and Thai artists present varied music styles. The Pattaya Songkran festival or Wan Lai in local language, happens in mid April every year. It lasts for several days with the water throwing, the beauty pageants, cultural shows, musical performances, fireworks, and water sports competition. Another musical attraction is the Pattaya Classical Guitar Festival, on the last weekend of October each year which brings more tourists to Pattaya.

Other adrenaline rush activities include a weeklong sailing event, Top of the Gulf Regatta which is usually held at the end of April and start of May. The Pattaya Marathon, features several race categories and is held in July.  Finally, the Burapa Pattaya Bike Week is Thailand’s biggest motorcycle event held in Pattaya every February, attracting motorcycle enthusiasts from all over Southeast Asia and abroad.

Travelling to Pattaya with a companion is best, considering the many sights and festivals that need to be shared and appreciated.  It will surely be a colourful and festive journey.

Zhejiang is a coastal province of the People’s Republic of China. The word Zhejiang means zigzagging referring to Qiantang River which passes through Hangzhou, the capital of the province.  This province has many hills and valleys to offer to guests and tourists, great cuisine to fill visitors’ appetite, and insights on balancing the economy to sustain its lead.

Go High up Hills

Zhejiang is landscaped mostly of hills, approximately 70% of its total area. Valleys and plains are found along the rivers and coast line. The northern part of the province lies south of the Yangtze Delta, and comprises of plains around the cities of Jiaxing,  Huzhou, and  Hangzhou, Major rivers include the Ou and Qiantang. Most rivers form valleys in the highlands, rapids and other features peculiar to this type of topography. Famous lakes include the West Lake of Hangzhou and the South Lake of Jiaxing.  What a beautiful sight from up the hills.  The lakes provide a feeling of serenity and allow onlookers wider perspective and oneness with nature..

Get Down into Cuisine

Zhejiang cuisine is one of the 8 Culinary Traditions of Chinese cuisine. It consists of the traditional ways of cooking in Zhejiang, in Shanghai, and in the former Chinese capital of Hangzhou.  Generally, Zhejiang-style of food is not greasy but has a fresh and soft flavor and fragrance.  Zhejiang cuisine uses at least three styles, each coming from a city in the province. Hangzhou style is characterized by many variations and the use of bamboo shoots which add a tender element to the food. It is served by several restaurants in the area. Shaoxing style is specializing in freshwater fish and poultry while the Ningbo style concentrates in seafood, with emphasis on fresh and salty dishes.

Famous Dishes in Zhejiang include: Dongpo pork or fried pork belly stewed in soy sauce and wine; Beggar’s chicken which started from Jiangsu but became popular in Hangzhou, therefore became a Hangzhou cuisine; and a variety of fish and vinegar in the menu.

Balancing the Economy

Zhejiang has become one of the richest and most commercial provinces in China. Compared to other Chinese provinces, the growth of the different regions in Zhejiang is more balanced. While the county side still lags behind, in 2006, the per capita disposable incomes of all eleven prefecture-level divisions in Zhejiang ranked among the top 30 in Chinese cities.

The province is known as the “Land of Fish and Rice” with rice as the main crop, followed by wheat; while north Zhejiang particularly the Zhoushan fishery is the largest in the country. The province also leads in tea production among the provinces of China.  Zhejiang’s towns are known for handicraft production like silk.

It’s wonderful to visit a place that is basically traditional in practices yet strong in production. It takes a lot of perseverance and hard work on the part of the people to bring their province to where they envisioned it to be, a strong province; a competitive one. Just like in business, the people in Zhejiang are entrepreneurs ready to face challenges to make their economy strong and their country proud.

Boracay is a small island in the Philippine archipelago, located 2 km off the northwest tip of Panay Island in the Western Visayas region of the country. The island includes the barangays of Balabag, Manoc-Manoc, and Yapak in the municipality of Malay, province of Aklan. The Philippine Tourism Authority and the provincial government of Aklan join hands in administering Boracay.

White Sand Beaches and Climate

Boracay is famous because of its white sand beaches. These beaches are situated on the western side of the island thereby making it sheltered from the winds. The peak season for tourism on this island is during the Amihan times.

The seasonal weather patterns in Boracay are of two types; the Amihan and the Habagat.  Amihan is the cool northeast wind characterized by little or no rainfall and moderate temperature.  The Habagat on the other hand, is the southwest monsoon wind with frequent heavy rainfall and a prevailing wind.

Festivities and Events

The remarkable Ati-Atihan Festival takes place every January in Kalibo of neighboring Panay Island. A smaller celebration of the Ati-Atihan festival is held right in Boracay, on the second or third week of January.

Boracay is a venue for the Asian Windsurfing Tour. It also hosts the Boracay International Fun Board Cup competition normally held in January on Bulabog Beach.

Yearly Dragon boat races are held in Boracay under the management of the Philippine Dragon Boat Federation, with competing teams coming from other Asian nations and from cities and islands around the Philippines. These races take place during the summer months of April and May.

In Boracay one can also find an 18-hole par 72 golf course designed by Graham Marsh for those who love golf.  Other events include scuba diving, kite boarding, snorkelling, windsurfing, cliff diving, and helmet diving.

Beach Hotels

Boracay hotels are varied; from tropical breeze huts on the beach to high end resorts, they are all in the island.  With 263 hotels to choose from, some tourists find it difficult to select the right place to stay.

Hotels being global offer world class amenities.  Take for instance the Boracay Regency Hotel whose structures are grand and basically new considering that Boracay became very popular only in the 90’s. Other hotels include the District Boracay, La Camela de Boracay, the Discovery Shores Hotel, the Ambassador in Paradise, and many more.

Most hotels in Boracay have beach lounges, swimming pool, open breeze bars, spa, gym and fitness centre, and luxury rooms for tourists and visitors.  There are function rooms, too for meetings, conferences, and other corporate activities.  There is a shop within the hotel to complete one’s tour for having to buy goods to bring home and carry with them to their home town as “pasalubong” or souvenir giveaways.

Leisure and Relaxation

People come to Boracay basically for leisure and relaxation.  Most newlyweds stay in Boracay for their honeymoons. Celebrities visit this island to relax away from their hectic lifestyles. To walk barefoot on the white beach is as relaxing as the massage you can get. The clear waters match the white sand in offering a refreshing adventure.

Hundreds of the Ryukyu Islands comprise the southernmost prefecture of Japan, Okinawa. The Ryukyus extend southwest from Ky?sh? to Taiwan.  Naha, the capital of Okinawa is in the southern part of Okinawa Island.

How Okinawa Started?

Okinawa started as the Ryukyu Kingdom in the 15th century.  Due to its location which is close to China, Taiwan, and Japan, it then developed into a prosperous trading nation. During this time, many Gusukus or castles were constructed.  Also in this period, the Ryukyu Kingdom had a tributary relationship with China.  Despite Satsuma’s strong influence over the islands, the Ry?ky? Kingdom was able to maintain a reasonable degree of political freedom for more than two hundred years.

Later in 1868 after the Meiji Restoration, Japan, officially annexed the kingdom after military incursions and changed the name of the island as Ryukyu han. At the time, the Ta-tsing Empire demanded sovereignty over the isllands of the Ry?ky? Kingdom, considering that it was also a tributary nation of China. In 1878, Ryukyu han became Okinawa Prefecture of Japan while all other hans had become prefectures of Japan earlier in 1872. Hans are Ethnic groups of natives to East Asia and constitute 92% of China’s population and 98% of Taiwan’s.  Okinawans first obtained the right to vote for representatives to the national Diet in 1912. Japan’s Diet is its bicameral legislature with lower and upper houses.

What is Current?

As of March 31, 2008, Okinawa got its designation for its Natural Parks with19% of its total land area. These parks include the Okinawa Kaigan, the  Iriomote-Ishigaki National Park;  and Okinawa Senseki Quasi-National Parks.  Added to this list are the Kumejima, Irabu, and Tonaki Prefectural Natural Parks.  Iriomote is home to one of the most endangered and rare cat species, the Iriomote Cat. The region is also a home to Trimeresuruselegans, pit vipers. Coral reefs found in this part of Japan are habitats for a diverse marine fauna. Yearly, the sea turtles return to Okinawa’s southern islands to lay eggs.  Warnings are provided to swimmers during summer months regarding poisonous jellyfish.  There are other dangerous sea creatures too..

The Nippon Gallery in New York held the“Okinawa Art in NY” Exhibition from June 20 to July 27th, 2012. Artists included renowned,Yoshiharu Higa (photography), SeikichiTamanaha (painting), Michiko Uehara (weaving), and other Okinawan talents. There hasn’t been an exhibition like this in the United States before. The Okinawan Art is finally getting the recognition it deserves.

For Tourists:

Aside from the Natural Parks, which tourists love to explore tourists can learn so many things from the Japanese culture.  One can notice the hospitality of the Japanese people. There are homes that welcome visitors and treat them like they are part of their families.  The Japanese women are trained to take care of things inside their homes.  From cooking fresh and nutritious foods, the ingredients of which come from the mountains and the seas to setting the meals on the tables with plating so well arranged including matching colors and forms with the food these plates will hold. These foods are mostly placed in small bowls or plates like sushi, ramen, teriyaki, tempura and many others. When you visit  families, you have to take off your shoes first to get inside and observe how they work around their well maintained homes. Isn’t that wonderful?

When dining with your special someone, it is but natural that you would want everything to be perfect – that is, an equilibrium between good food, romantic ambience and of course a scenic view – all mixing together in a harmonious blend. Looking for such a place may seem challenging, but the list below should give you an idea about where to start looking.

Eagle’s Eye Restaurant

The weather in this mountain top resort may be chilly, but that should be of no worry as there is enough warmth that emanates from star-crossed lovers who choose to dine in this restaurant. The Eagle’s Eye Restaurant is one of the amenities of the Kicking Horse Mountain Resort which is located in British Columbia, Canada. Getting there requires a 15-minute ride on a gondola, which should be a good start to this romantic escapade. The restaurant itself is a nothing fancy, but rather one that has a rustic yet charming design of natural timber and gray stones with tall windows to ensure that guests have the best views of the snow-capped mountains while feasting on juicy Rocky Mountain Bison or fresh BC coho salmon.

Seaside Restaurant

Dining by the beach has got to be one of the most romantic dinner for two, and one that is offered by Seaside Restaurant in Warapura Resort in Thailand. Being located by the sea, the restaurant allows lovers to enjoy sumptuous seafood cuisines like lobsters in tamarind sauce or fried sea-bass in masaman sauce. Of course, other cuisines (both international and local) are served as well. Indulge in these wonderful foods as you enjoy the view of the lolling waves and swaying coconut trees, all visible in this open air restaurant of dark wood and white silky curtains. The restaurant also provides inhouse entertainment of bossa nova music and jazz to further enhance the romantic ambience of the place.

The Barbetta Garden

If gardens are your idea of a romantic dinner, then head on to New York, USA for this incredible garden restaurant – the Barbetta Garden. The restaurant has been in operation since 1906 and has served Piemontese cuisines like Fonduta, Carne Cruda, and their all time famous white truffles. Being one of the most picturesque restaurants in the area, the Barbetta Garden served as the filming venue for many Hollywood movies and TV series like The Departed and Sex in the City. Enjoy their mouth-watering dishes as you dine beside shady trees (some of which are over a hundred years old), a flowing fountain with cherubs,  and amidst the blossoms and sweet scents of jasmine, wisteria, magnolia and several others. In the owners own words, the Barbetta Garden leans towards being a grand country estate rather than a garden in the city.

Only a handful of other experiences can beat fine dining with the one you love in a beautiful restaurant with great food and equally great atmosphere. It may be pricey and extravagant, but seeing the smile and joy in your lover’s eyes makes every cent well-worth it.
